ELI’s Founder Dr. Hanita Zimrin honored by
Israeli Prime Minister

On March 8, 2008, International Women’s Day, Dr. Hanita Zimrin was honored by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert as one of eight women who have made extraordinary contributions to Israeli Society. The eight women were honored as part of a year long Israel 60 celebration.

Message from ELI’s Founder, Dr. Hanita Zimrin

I am very proud to have been chosen from among so many worthy and accomplished Israeli women to receive this award. For me, this honor serves as a validation of thirty years of vision and hard work which have been marked by many successes, large and small. When I started ELI nearly thirty years ago I encountered complete denial as to the occurrence of child abuse in Israel. I’m very proud that today the issue of child abuse is in the national spotlight, and that almost no one denies its prevalence anymore, even in the Jewish world. Furthermore I’m extremely pleased that ELI and (Israel as a result) have been recognized as world leaders in child welfare and protection. I feel very fortunate to be have been a part of and in fact to lead this process, however, I didn’t do it alone. I did it with the devoted staff of ELI and with the help of generous friends of ELI in Israel, the United States, and Europe. For me this award is not a summary of a life, but rather a beginning to the next stage of materializing the ultimate dream of ending child abuse. To this end there are still many steps which I look forward to climbing together.

ELI Therapists Collaborate with National
T.V. Station and Police to arrest 11
On-line Sexual Predators

As part of an ongoing internet safety initiative, ELI worked closely with Israel’s channel 10 to create a television show based on the American “To Catch a Predator”. ELI therapists posing as adolescent girls entered chat rooms and responded to on-line sexual predators who wanted to arrange clandestine meetings. The meetings were scheduled to occur in an apartment which was rented by channel 10, and guarded by the police. Eleven men showed up to what they thought were secret meetings with adolescent girls and they were all promptly arrested. Seven of them were charged. ELI used this national television event as the launching pad for a nationwide awareness campaign among both parents and children. ELI hired a lobbyist to urge the Knesset to stiffen penalties for on-line predatory behavior, created a blog and youth task force where teenagers make internet safety presentations in schools and conducted educational activities with parents. ELI printed and distributed mouse pads with “rules for using the internet.” And ELI created a treaty between parents and children which was publicized in newspapers and other media. The treaty has several elements:

1) Children are entitled to use the internet, however

2) They must promise not to give out personal information such as their name, address, or telephone number.

3) They will disconnect from the internet immediately if they suspect that something is wrong.

4) They will never under any circumstances meet anyone from the internet alone and without first telling their parents.

The purpose of the treaty is not to punish or deprive children of the internet, but rather to insure that they use the internet in a way that keeps them safe from would be online sexual predators.

Emergency Shelter Renovation Nearly Complete
Thanks to the generosity of the Women's Philanthropy Division of the Jewish Federation of Somerset, Hunterdon, and Warren Counties, New Jersey, ELI was able to invest $25,000 into renovating and updating its emergency shelter. When children face life threatening situations at home they are brought to ELI’s emergency shelter in the heart of Tel-Aviv. They come abused, frightened, and sometimes in the middle of the night. The goals of the emergency shelter are to protect these children, provide professionally coordinated crisis intervention, diagnose the children, and prescribe and begin to implement long term treatment plans. In addition, since the children in the shelter are sometimes there for extended stays, the shelter houses a school and kindergarten. Donated by the Municipality of Tel-Aviv more than ten years ago, the physical plant of ELI’s emergency shelter was aging, tattered, and in need of repairs. Thank you again to the Women's Philanthropy Division of the Jewish Federation of Somerset, Hunterdon, and Warren Counties, New Jersey for your investment in ELI's emergency shelter, and for giving the children a pleasant place to stay during a very difficult time in their lives.

American Friends of ELI Endowment Fund continues to grow!
In 2007 with the guidance and initial investment from ELI’s West Coast Chairs, Kent Newton and Bill Slaton, American Friends of ELI started its first endowment fund. Endowment funds are essentially rainy day funds or savings accounts that generate tax free income which non profits may use during times of crisis or to bolster their annual campaigns. Managed by the Jewish Endowment Fund of the West, American Friends of ELI’s endowment fund has grown to over $15,000 in just one year. The Board of Directors of American Friends of ELI has made a commitment to reinvest dividends and allow the fund to grow for the foreseeable future. While we must be concerned with supporting ELI’s annual campaign, I hope you’ll consider helping ELI to insure its future by making an increased gift to ELI’s endowment fund. Please indicate on the enclosed form which portion (if any) of your tax deductible contribution to ELI you’d like to have invested in ELI’s endowment fund in 2008. Thank you again for your generosity to ELI.
